Tracking Dog Breeds Vary by State
No single breed dominates deer tracking nationwide. Bloodhounds are the most commonly reported breed on TRAKR, but they account for only about 11% of dogs with a reported breed.
Regional differences are much more pronounced. Catahoula Leopard Dogs are especially common among tracking teams in Louisiana and Mississippi, Blue Lacys stand out in Texas, and Bavarian Mountain Scent Hounds are among the most commonly reported tracking breeds in several northern states.
These differences illustrate the variety of breeds successfully used for wounded-deer tracking across the United States and how breed preferences can vary considerably by region.
