TRACKING LAWS* FOR THE STATE OF KENTUCKY
Know the rules before you track. These Kentucky laws help insure ethical recovery, respect for landowners, and the future of our hunting rights.
Kentucky allows the use of tracking dogs to help recover wounded deer and other big game animals. Tracking dogs may be used for recovery purposes and must remain under the handler’s control. Tracking activity is intended to locate wounded or deceased animals and cannot be used as a method of pursuing healthy deer.
Hunters and tracking teams must follow Kentucky’s hunter orange requirements during seasons where those regulations apply. During firearm seasons, wearing the required orange clothing helps keep recovery teams visible while searching for wounded game.
Kentucky does not require a special tracking dog certification or permit for handlers. Hunters remain responsible for having the proper licenses, permits, and following all harvest reporting requirements for the animal being recovered.
Tracking dogs may be used to assist in locating wounded game after a legal shot. Recovery efforts should remain focused on finding the wounded animal and not be used as an opportunity to continue hunting outside legal methods or hours.
Using a tracking dog does not give hunters or handlers permission to enter private property. If a wounded animal crosses onto land where permission has not been granted, the landowner should be contacted before continuing the recovery.
Drone laws for recovering game vary by state and continue to change. Hunters considering drone recovery in Kentucky should verify current Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife regulations before using unmanned aircraft to locate wildlife.

* Disclaimer: The information provided by TRAKR is intended as a general summary of state tracking laws and regulations and is not legal advice. Because laws and regulations may change, hunters and trackers should always verify current statutes, regulations, and agency guidance before using dogs, drones, or other recovery methods in their state.
