Know the rules before you track. These Indiana laws help ensure ethical recovery, respect for landowners, and the future of our hunting rights.

Dogs and other domesticated animals may not be used to hunt deer. However, a dog may be used while on a leash to track or trail a wounded deer. Indiana law does not authorize off-leash tracking of wounded deer.

Hunter orange is required while hunting deer during the youth, firearms, and muzzleloader seasons. It is also required during the portion of the deer reduction zone season when firearms are authorized. The hunter orange must be solid fluorescent orange and visible at all times.

A valid deer hunting license is required to hunt deer in Indiana unless the person qualifies for a license exemption. Indiana’s wounded-deer tracking provision does not establish a separate state tracking-dog permit or certification requirement.

Indiana’s legal deer hunting hours are from one-half hour before sunrise until one-half hour after sunset. Nighttime tracking with a leashed dog is generally permitted, but taking or dispatching a deer remains subject to Indiana’s legal hunting hours, weapon restrictions, and other applicable regulations.

A hunter or tracker may not enter another person’s property to track or retrieve a deer without the landowner’s permission, preferably obtained in writing. If permission is denied, the hunter may contact a local Indiana conservation officer for assistance, but the landowner may still legally refuse access to or recovery of the deer.

Drones and infrared sensors may be used to locate and recover a legally taken deer in Indiana. They may not be used to scout, locate, or detect deer as an aid to hunting. Drone use does not authorize entry onto another person’s property or recovery of a deer from that property without the landowner’s permission. Drone operation on Indiana DNR properties is generally prohibited unless the site is designated for drone use or specific authorization is granted.

These averages are based on rates and pricing instructions supplied by trackers through their TRAKR profiles. When a tracker listed mileage charges or travel-based pricing, the estimated rate was calculated using a standard travel distance of 50 miles each way.

Fee ranges were calculated using the midpoint. Separate recovery or finder fees were added to the initial tracking fee. When separate rates were listed for bucks and does, the buck rate was used because more than 80 percent of tracking requests involve bucks.

Indiana Deer Recovery Network is a statewide resource created to help hunters locate trained deer recovery trackers when a wounded deer cannot be recovered through a normal blood trail.

Why Indiana Allows Tracking Dogs

Requiring a tracking dog to remain leashed helps separate legitimate wounded-game recovery from hunting or chasing deer with dogs.

A leash allows the handler to:

Keep the dog focused on the wounded deer’s individual scent line.
Prevent the dog from pursuing healthy deer.
Maintain control near roads, homes, livestock, and neighboring properties.
Stop at a property boundary until permission is obtained.
Interpret changes in the dog’s behavior and the condition of the trail.
Protect the dog from traffic, fences, wildlife, and other hazards.

A trained tracking dog does not simply follow visible blood. The dog may follow scent from the deer’s hooves, interdigital glands, hair, tissue, disturbed vegetation, and other scent left along the animal’s path.

Certification and Training

Indiana does not generally require every tracking dog to hold a formal blood-tracking certification. However, professional training and recognized testing can help demonstrate that a dog and handler have developed the skills required for real recovery work.
