TRACKING LAWS* FOR THE STATE OF WISCONSIN

Know the rules before you track. These Wisconsin laws help insure ethical recovery, respect for landowners, and the future of our hunting rights.

Wisconsin allows hunters to use tracking dogs to help locate and recover wounded game animals. Dogs used for recovery must remain on a leash and under the control of the handler throughout the track. Off-lead tracking is not allowed. Tracking dogs are intended only for locating wounded or deceased animals and cannot be used to chase or pursue healthy wildlife.

Anyone participating in a recovery must follow Wisconsin's blaze orange or fluorescent pink requirements during seasons where those rules apply. During firearm seasons, hunters and tracking teams should wear the required safety clothing while recovering wounded game.

Wisconsin does not require a special license, permit, or certification to use a tracking dog for recovery. Hunters remain responsible for following all normal hunting license, harvest authorization, and tagging requirements for the animal being recovered.

Tracking dogs may be used to recover wounded animals during legal hunting hours and after dark. Any tracking activity must be limited to locating and recovering wounded game and cannot be used as a method of hunting or pursuing animals.

The use of a tracking dog does not provide permission to enter private land. If a wounded animal crosses onto another property, hunters and tracking teams must follow Wisconsin trespass laws and obtain any required permission before continuing the recovery.

Wisconsin allows drones to be used to assist with locating dead game animals under certain conditions. Drones may not be used to hunt, chase, drive, or assist in the taking of wildlife. Anyone using a drone for recovery should verify current Wisconsin DNR rules before operating.

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT WISCONSIN DEER TRACKING NETWORK

Wisconsin Deer Tracking Network has become one of the largest and most visible deer recovery networks in the Midwest. The organization exists to connect hunters with trained tracking dog handlers to recover wounded deer and other game animals that might otherwise be lost. The network brings together tracking teams from across Wisconsin, giving hunters a centralized resource to locate experienced handlers when a recovery is needed.

The organization maintains a statewide tracker map with teams covering much of the Badger State. Many listed handlers have years of experience behind their dogs, and some participate in additional training and certification through organizations such as United Blood Trackers.

Wisconsin Deer Tracking Network has grown into an organized community focused on ethical game recovery, hunter education, and promoting the responsible use of tracking dogs. Through integration with the TRAKR app, hunters can quickly submit a recovery request and notify available tracking teams instead of relying solely on phone lists or social media.

Size and Impact

Some publicly available Wisconsin Deer Tracking Network information includes:

  • The group has created one of Wisconsin's primary resources for connecting hunters with tracking dog handlers.

  • The network maintains an interactive tracker map/list to help hunters find available recovery teams throughout the state.

  • Wisconsin has one of the largest deer hunting communities in the country, creating significant demand for tracking services.

Wisconsin Tracking Dog Regulations

Wisconsin allows the use of dogs to help recover wounded game animals. Dogs used for recovery must remain leashed and under the handler's control while tracking.

Why Wisconsin Requires Leashes

Wisconsin's leash requirement helps distinguish the recovery of wounded animals from the pursuit of healthy wildlife. Keeping tracking dogs leashed allows handlers to follow a specific animal's trail while maintaining control of the dog and reducing conflicts with wildlife, landowners, and other hunters.

Certification and Training

Wisconsin does not require a state-issued tracking dog certification. However, many handlers voluntarily pursue additional training, testing, and education through organizations such as United Blood Trackers.

Real-world tracking experience, understanding wounded animal behavior, and building a strong dog-handler team are important parts of becoming a successful tracker.
