TRACKING LAWS* FOR THE STATE OF OHIO

Know the rules before you track. These Ohio laws help insure ethical recovery, respect for landowners, and the future of our hunting rights.

Ohio allows hunters to use tracking dogs to help recover wounded deer. Dogs used for deer recovery must remain on a leash while tracking. The dog may be used to locate a wounded deer but cannot be used to hunt, chase, or pursue healthy deer.

Hunters and tracking teams must follow Ohio’s hunter orange requirements during seasons where they apply. During deer gun seasons, anyone hunting or taking wild animals during legal hours must visibly wear a solid hunter orange or camouflage hunter orange vest, jacket, or coveralls.

Ohio does not require a special tracking dog permit or state certification. Hunters remain responsible for having the proper hunting license, deer permit, and harvest documentation for the animal being recovered.

Ohio allows leashed dogs to be used to track wounded deer, and nighttime tracking is allowed. Recovery activity should remain focused strictly on locating wounded game, not pursuing or taking healthy animals.

Using a tracking dog does not give hunters or handlers permission to enter private property. If a wounded deer crosses onto land where the hunter does not have access, permission must be obtained before continuing the recovery.

Ohio hunters should verify current Ohio Division of Wildlife guidance before using drones for recovery. Do not assume drone recovery is legal unless it is clearly allowed under current regulations for the specific situation.

Because laws and regulations may change, hunters and trackers should always verify current statutes, regulations, and agency guidance before using dogs, drones, or other recovery methods in their state.

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT OHIO DEER TRACKERS

Ohio Deer Trackers has become one of the more visible deer recovery communities in Ohio. The group exists to help create a county-based list of deer tracking dogs so hunters can find help recovering wounded deer.

The group operates through Facebook and helps connect hunters with tracking dog handlers across the Buckeye State. Ohio’s mix of farmland, hardwoods, creek bottoms, and thick cover can make deer recovery difficult, especially when blood is limited or a deer travels onto challenging terrain.

Size and Impact

Some publicly available Ohio Deer Trackers information includes:

  • Ohio Deer Trackers was created to help organize deer tracking dogs by county.

  • The group gives hunters a centralized Facebook resource for locating tracking help.

  • Ohio has a large deer hunting community, creating strong demand for recovery teams.

  • The network helps promote ethical recovery and the use of leashed tracking dogs when deer might otherwise be lost.

Ohio Tracking Dog Regulations

Ohio allows wounded deer to be tracked with a leashed dog. The law does not allow dogs to be used to hunt deer, but it does allow a leashed dog to help recover a deer that has already been wounded.

Why Ohio Requires Leashes

Ohio’s leash requirement helps separate recovery tracking from hunting deer with dogs. Keeping the dog leashed allows the handler to stay in control while following the trail of a specific wounded deer.

Certification and Training

Ohio does not require state-issued certification for tracking dogs or handlers. Many serious tracking teams build experience through training, mentoring, real-world recoveries, and organizations such as American Blood Trackers Association and United Blood Trackers.
